Weird Fact

For the ~200 years since it's discovery, the Rosetta Stone was thought to be made of black basalt.

The restoration efforts of recent years, however, have revealed that the stone is actually a pinkish grey granite.

Seems that Napoleon (whose troops discovered it in Egypt) ordered that copies of the inscription be sent to scholars worldwide for study, and the paper copies of the inscription were made by inking the surface of the stone and using it like a printing block.

The ink was never cleaned off.

I love history.
